July 19, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Pope Francis has appointed the Rev. Andrej Znoska, parish priest of Divine Mercy Church in Lida, Hrodna region, as auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Pinsk, the Vatican’s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A year ago, Belarusian law enforcers reportedly arrested Znoska, but the reasons remained unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Znoska, 44, is a graduate of Belarusian State University and Cardinal Stefan Wyszy\u0144ski University in Warsaw, Poland.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ordained to the priesthood in 2005, Znoska served in Hrodna and Lida. He is known as a consultant to the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Belarus (CCBB) and a contributor to the Belarusian translation of the Catholic Code of Canon Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the 2020 presidential election, the relationship between the state and the Roman Catholic Church deteriorated after priests and faithful denounced police brutality and repression. Some clerics were arrested or forced to flee the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past four years, at least 19 Orthodox, 25 Roman Catholic, 25 Protestant and five Greek Catholic priests experienced politically-motivated persecution, according to the Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
