July 15, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Anatol H\u0142az, a spokesman for the Belarusian foreign ministry, has condemned Latvia\u2019s ban on entry of cars with Belarusian license plates as an inhumane, uncivilized and undemocratic step and a blow to common people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk has no intention of taking “symmetric measures,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

H\u0142az noted that Belarus is interested in contacts with its neighbors and maintaining a visa waiver program for Latvians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move will primarily affect mixed families, tourists with children and ordinary travelers and runs counter to Latvia’s national interests, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his opinion, the ban has no legitimate justification and will complicate humanitarian and cultural relations between Latvia and Belarus and increase mistrust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From July 16, cars with Belarusian license plates will be banned from entering the European Union (EU) through checkpoints on Latvia’s borders with Belarus and Russia. Riga took the step to ensure compliance with EU sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
