July 14, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> A total of 22,021 illegal migrants entered Germany via Belarus from January 2022 to May 2024, said Rita Schwarzel\u00fchr-Sutter, parliamentary state secretary to the German interior ministry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of migrants who used this route grew from 8,760 people in 2022 to 11,932 in 2023, the official said in her response to a parliamentary inquiry from MP Alexander Throm, representing the opposition Christian Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of migrants fell to 464 in the first three months of 2024, an almost five-fold decrease compared to the same period last year.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost one-third of illegal migrants who entered Germany via Belarus were Syrians, followed by nationals of Afghanistan and Yemen, accounting for 24 and 7 percent, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU has thwarted at least 23,971 attempts to violate its border from Belarus, with 922 attempts recorded in the first 12 days of July. Poland reported 20,675 illegal border crossings; Latvia and Lithuania, 3,019 and 277 attempts, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarus-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions on the border escalated this spring with the spike in illegal border crossings to at least 7,694 and attacks on Polish border guards by people trying to cross the border illegally. One of them resulted in the death of Polish soldier Mateusz Sitek, stabbed at the border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
