July 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> “Putin and \u0141uka\u0161enka are as much a danger to the global order as Adolf Hitler was in his time,” reads<\/a> an opinion article in The Washington Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its authors Nancy Pelosi, speaker emerita of the US House of Representatives, and \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, leader of the Belarusian pro-democratic opposition, note that Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka put Belarus at the center of the Ukrainian crisis. He allows Russian President Vladimir Putin to exercise influence and control over Belarus as long as it helps him to stay in power, they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two leaders described political repression in Belarus, where citizens “live in fear of a knock on the door.” They mentioned confession videos filmed by Committee for State Security (KGB) agents to be posted online and spread fear. Nevertheless, Belarusians are resisting \u0141uka\u0161enka’s tyranny, they continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They named “political prisoners” who have been held incommunicado for more than a year, such as Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski, Maryja Kale\u015bnikava, Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d and Maksim Znak. They also cited “concerning reports” about the health of Ale\u015b Bialacki, the imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pelosi and Cichano\u016dskaja called on NATO allies to take steps to support the pro-democracy movement in Belarus and to increase pressure on \u0141uka\u0161enka – “and, by extension, Putin himself.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safe haven should be provided for Belarusian activists who are forced to flee the country, they suggested. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We must provide comprehensive assistance to the Belarusian pro-freedom movement, including independent media, civil society groups, human rights defenders and the repressed,” they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, tough sanctions should be enforced against Russia for its assault on democracy, “isolating Putin and his economy from the democratic world.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, the Russian and Belarusian regimes should be designated as “state sponsors of terrorism,” they noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the authors called on the allies to support the Belarusian opposition and Ukrainian freedom fighters until the triumph of democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
