July 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The National Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine have spoken out against the participation of five neutral athletes from Belarus in this summer’s Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agencies’ joint letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) accused the athletes of supporting Russia’s war or otherwise failing to meet neutrality criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trampolinist Ivan Litvinovi\u010d called on Belarusians to vote in Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s illegal referendum, participated in a propaganda event involving \u0141uka\u0161enka’s son Viktar and “liked posts with Putin and \u0141uka\u0161enka’s ally Miron\u010dyk-Ivanova,” the letter says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shooting athlete Darja \u010cuprys is a member of the Belarusian Armed Forces’ sports committee and often posts pictures with Belarusian military, it says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cyclist Hanna Cierach shared a propaganda post by Viktar \u0141uka\u0161enka, the letter says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taekwondo athlete Hieorhij Hurcyje\u016d gave likes to militaristic, anti-Ukrainian posts by a coach from Russia, according to the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swimmer Anastasija \u0160kurdaj is “part of the Belarusian army.” She allegedly participated in a propaganda event with Juryj \u0160ulejka, chairman of the Brest Regional Executive Committee, and was even sanctioned by the West for supporting Russian aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyiv reiterated that as long as Russian troops continue to wage war against the Ukrainian people with support from the Belarusian government, Russian and Belarusian athletes, including neutrals, should be banned from all international events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ukrainian NOC and sports ministry called on the IOC to ensure the principles of fairness and impartiality in international competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The five Belarusians have already confirmed their participation in the Paris Olympics as individual neutral athletes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trampolinist Vijaleta Bardzi\u0142o\u016dskaja, weightlifters Siuzana Va\u0142ad\u017ako and Ja\u016dhien Cichanco\u016d, wrestler Abubakar Chas\u0142achana\u016d, rowers Ja\u016dhien Za\u0142aty and Ta\u0107ciana Klimovi\u010d, shooting athlete Alaksandra Piatrova, canoeists U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Kraviec and Julija Tru\u0161kina, swimmers Alina Zmu\u0161ka and Illa \u0160ymanovi\u010d are also planning to compete in the Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Jahor Akuli\u010d, U\u0142adzis\u0142a\u016d Kaz\u0142o\u016d, D\u017amitryj Zarubski, Vijaleta Rebikava, Kry\u015bcina Sazykina, Aryna Sabalenka and Viktoryja Azaranka have refused to participate despite being invited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the war in Ukraine began in February 2022, the IOC urged sports federations to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It later recommended that some of them could be allowed as neutral athletes under certain conditions, such as not supporting the war. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2023, the IOC allowed neutrals to compete in the Paris Olympics, which will be held from July 26 to August 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
