July 4, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The United States welcomes the release of “Belarus\u2019 most vulnerable political prisoners,” Christopher Smith, deputy assistant secretary for Eastern Europe at the US Department of State, has said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“More than 1,400 political prisoners remain unjustly detained,” he added. “We urge their immediate release and reaffirm our commitment to human rights and democracy in Belarus.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Viasna Human Rights Center has information about three women and six men released yesterday under an amnesty program, announced by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka two days ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the released is Ryhor Kastusio\u016d, the leader of the outlawed Belarusian Popular Front (BPF), who was diagnosed with cancer in prison. Another one is reportedly a mother of four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja welcomed the move, drawing attention to the plight of more than 200 political prisoners from the so-called humanitarian list whose prolonged detention places their lives under threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
