June 27, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Germany and “some other” exporters forced the European Union to ease new sanctions against Belarus, tagesspiegel.de<\/em> reported after the EU ambassadors had agreed on new restrictions against Minsk on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new package was designed to combat the circumvention of sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Germany and France blocked the full EU export ban for vehicles, the report said, citing diplomatic sources in Brussels. The ban will reportedly affect only equipment that can be used for military purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luxury items, such as leather-made goods, perfumes and wine would be also exempt from restrictions, according to the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU started introducing sanctions against Belarus in 2020, two years before Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine, punishing the rigged presidential election and human rights abuse in the country. Belarusian defense sector was targeted later for supplying arms to Russia and circumventing Western sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, sanctions against Minsk have been weaker than those against Moscow, allowing Belarus to become Russia’s hub for sanctioned goods, including luxury items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
