June 26, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> EU ambassadors have agreed on a new sanctions package against Belarus, according to the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This package will strengthen our measures in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including combating circumvention of sanctions,” it said<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, the EU imposed sanctions on the Belarusian National Youth Union (BRSM), the BelOMO holding manufacturing military purpose optical equipment and its CEO Alaksandar Maroz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BRSM is described as \u201cone of the main actors involved in the deportation of Ukrainian children from the illegally occupied territories of Ukraine to Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personal sanctions will also affect its first secretary Alaksandar \u0141ukjana\u016d and Dmitri Mezentsev, state secretary of the Union State of Russia and Belarus, for \u201ccontributing to the illegal deportation and re-education of Ukrainian children,\u201d the EU Council stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BelOMO holding produces and sells optical sights for small arms, managing several other defense companies. Its subsidiary, the Minsk-based Vavi\u0142a\u016d Mechanical Plant, specializes in optical equipment for tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU started introducing sanctions against Belarus in 2020, two years before Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine, punishing the rigged presidential election and human rights abuse in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian defense sector was targeted later for supplying arms to Russia and circumventing Western sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
