June 23, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> “Initiatives to limit border traffic due to the regime’s ongoing provocations should target the dictator, not the people,” Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said, commenting on Poland’s intention to close all crossings on the border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Keeping Belarusians connected to Europe is crucial \u2013 their mobility must be assured,” she said<\/a> today on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her opinion, Belarusians should not be abandoned “to their fate behind a new iron curtain.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, Polish Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski said Warsaw is considering closing all border crossings in response to an influx of illegal migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are examining whether this is harmful to the economy,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cited the experience of Finland, which stopped the inflow of illegal migrants by completely closing its border with Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only two border crossings remain open on the Polish-Belarusian border: Terespol for passenger transport and Kukuryki for freight transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traffic through Ku\u017anica was suspended indefinitely in November 2021 and through Bobrowniki in February 2023 after Belarus sentenced Andrej Pa\u010dobut, a Polish minority activist and journalist, to eight years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw, Riga and Vilnius call the migration crisis, which began in the spring of 2021, a \u201chybrid attack\u201d organized by Minsk and Moscow. Since the beginning of this year, EU countries have stopped 22,100 illegal entry attempts from Belarus. Poland alone has recorded 19,300 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 6, the Polish General Command reported the death of Mateusz Sitek, a private of the 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade stabbed at the border with Belarus on May 28. The soldier was reportedly attacked by a person trying to cross the the border illegally with a large group of migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 13, Poland established a buffer zone at the border with Belarus. According to the Polish interior ministry, it has helped reduce incidents by about a third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
