June 21, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 23 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day after thwarting 77 attempts on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, Polish border guards stopped 20 illegal border crossings and their Latvian counterparts, three. All attempts recorded on June 19 targeted Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of June, migrants tried to cross illegally from Belarus into the EU at least 3,267 times, with 2,919 attempts via Poland alone. Illegal border crossings fell 37.6 percent from the May level yet grew 41 percent compared to last June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 22,080 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, with 19,377 attempts via Poland alone, 2,466 via Latvia and 237 via Lithuania. Illegal border crossings picked up pace in February, reaching record highs in May, Pozirk\u2019s analysis of daily stats showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, the Polish interior ministry said illegal border crossings between Belarus and Poland plunged 30 percent since June 13, when Warsaw enacted a 90-day border area entry ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
