June 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Andrej Hniot has appealed the ruling by a Serbian judge\u00a0to extradite him to Belarus, presenting the evidence of his politically-motivated persecution in Belarus, the filmmaker said on his Instagram page. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hniot was arrested upon his arrival in Belgrade in October 2023, based on an Interpol arrest warrant issued at the request of Belarusian authorities, allegedly on suspicion of tax evasion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian filmmaker and his lawyers argued that these charges were fabricated and politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In spring, an appellate court in Belgrade had overruled the decision to extradite him to Belarus, but in late May the Belgrade High Court ordered his extradition again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hniot’s persecution in Belarus may be linked to video production for SOS.by<\/em>, an opposition association that Belarusian police branded an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The filmmaker has also cooperated with Current Time<\/em>, a television and digital news network produced by Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty<\/em> in cooperation with the Voice of America<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition, exiled activist communities, human rights groups and the European Union have spoken out in Hniot’s defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
