July 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus has recalled Ambassador Alaksandar Kaniuk from Armenia for consultations, the Belarusian foreign ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It pointed to a “complicated internal political situation” in the South Caucasus country and asked: “What does Belarus have to do with it?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier today, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he and other Armenian officials will not travel to Belarus as long as Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka is in power. Pashinyan was angered by \u0141uka\u0161enka’s declaration of support for Azerbaijan and his tour of Nagorno-Karabakh, which Azerbaijani forces captured last fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the prime minister’s statement, Yerevan recalled its Ambassador Razmik Khumaryan from Minsk for consultations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian foreign ministry called the move an attempt to “divert public attention from internal problems by portraying an external enemy” and a “short-sighted position.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In view of the developments, our ambassador will also arrive in Minsk from Yerevan soon,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added that Belarus and Armenia are linked by “long-standing close, friendly relations and a common history, as well as mutually beneficial trade and close business contacts.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We will not let these relations worsen, no matter how much the Armenian leadership is pushed to do so by external actors,” the ministry stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have never done anything to harm our friends, do not interfere in their internal affairs, respect the Armenian people and sincerely wish them leaders who will truly think about the future of the country and the well-being of the people.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
