June 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> From May 1 to June 12, the European Union countries did not allow at least 10,062 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus, Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland remained the primary target, as illegal border crossings soared 240 percent year on year over the past six weeks to 9,269 attempts. Latvia and Lithuania registered 742 and 51 attempts, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From June 10 to 12, Poland thwarted 460 illegal border crossings; Latvia, 99; and Lithuania, three. The Polish Border Guard reported arrests of two Georgians, one Pole and one Ukrainian for complicity in illegal migration. Migrants threw stones and tree branches at border guards, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few weeks, Polish border guards have been reporting physical attacks by aggressive migrants. Polish serviceman Mateusz Sitek who was patrolling the border died on June 6 after being stabbed on duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 21,181 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, 26 percent more than in the same period last year. Poland reported 18,610 attempts; Latvia 2,337; Lithuania, 234.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
