June 10, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) mourns the death of Christophe Deloire, director-general of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) who died two days ago of cancer aged 53, BAJ deputy head Barys Harecki has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The independent journalistic community is grateful to Deloire for the support he has given personally and to the RSF as a whole, Harecki noted, stressing that the RSF remains an “important and close partner” for media outlets and journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RSF was in close contact with the BAJ since the start of the crackdown on reporters in Belarus four years ago, while Deloire advocated the European Union’s political and financial support for Belarusian journalists, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deloire was known for campaigning against political regimes that harass and persecute journalists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago, he and RSF team members participated in a rally at the border of Lithuania and Belarus, holding portraits of jailed Belarusian journalists, Harecki noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deloire had served as RSF’s director-general since 2012, transforming it “into a global champion for the defense of journalism,” his colleagues said, praising his dedication to “the freedom, independence and pluralism of journalism in a context of information chaos. “<\/p>\n\n\n\n
