June 5, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has urged Ireland to support an international humanitarian foundation helping Belarusian political prisoners, her chief aide Franak Via\u010dorka told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She brought up this idea during a meeting with Joseph Hackett, secretary general at the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja thanked Ireland for supporting cultural projects and not letting its diplomats to present credentials to dictator Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, Via\u010dorka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parties also discussed the European Union’s sanctions against Minsk. “As the adoption of a new sanctions package is expected this month, Cichano\u016dskaja expressed hope that the EU would not make any exceptions for potash fertilizers. She also advocated simpler legalization procedures in EU countries and the issuance of visas for ordinary Belarusians,” the aide said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Irish ambassador to Lithuania, S\u00e9adhna MacHugh, also attended the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja launched the foundation on April 30 during her visit to Oslo. Contributions have been made by Norway (\u20ac850,000) and Sweden (\u20ac430,000).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
