June 3, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja met with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel last week to discuss sanctions against Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime, its isolation and support for Belarusians’ mobility in the European Union (EU) .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Franak Via\u010dorka, Cichano\u016dskaja’s top aide, told Pozirk<\/em> that they met at the European forum Concordia on peace and security across the continent held in Porto on May 28\u201329.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politicians discussed sanctions against \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime, in particular the issue of potash fertilizers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the aide, Cichano\u016dskaja urged the minister to “make sanctions effective, synchronize them [with those imposed on Russia] and close loopholes.” On the other hand, there is no need to isolate ordinary Belarusians, she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The democratic opposition leader asked the minister to find ways to solve the legalization problems of some 1,400 Belarusians living in Portugal, as well as Belarusian companies, which have moved to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two leaders also discussed a possible conference on the transition from dictatorship to democracy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Portugal had experience with such transition, and Cichano\u016dskaja suggested to the minister that this conference be held in his country,” Via\u010dorka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja also talked about cooperation in international organizations and in the cultural sphere, and urged Lisbon to continue supporting Ukraine and Belarusian democratic forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Via\u010dorka, Rangel assured her of Portugal’s “full support” for the Belarusian pro-democracy forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her visit, Cichano\u016dskaja also met with the conference’s chairman Jos\u00e9 Manuel Barroso, a former head of the European Commission and ex-prime minister of Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja and Barroso discussed “cooperation with the countries of the Global South, support for Belarusians who found themselves in exile without documents and passports, possible actions of international organizations to address the release of political prisoners and instruments of pressure on the regime.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
