June 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Tensions caused by third-country migrants trying to illegally cross from Belarus into the European Union kept growing on the first weekend of June with at least 424 attempts of which 412 targeted Poland alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossings soared 67 percent year on year and exceeded the figures recorded in the first two days of May by 19 percent, Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of the border guards’ data showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 19,237 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, with 16,870 attempts via Poland, 2,141 via Latvia and 226 via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossings picked up pace in February and kept reaching record highs in May, rising 22 percent year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
