May 31, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The interior ministry has added 13 men and six women to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total of entries to 4,119, its website says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six are serving prison terms and 13 have criminal records and may be serving non-custodial sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the blacklisted women is Ukrainian national Natalya Zakharenko given nine years in prison on espionage charges and Aksana Krupa, convicted in the same case for allegedly failing to report a crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights groups listed jailed Viktar Barkiet and journalist Andrej To\u0142\u010dyn as political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To\u0142\u010dyn is serving a two-and-a-half-year prison term for allegedly defaming the head of state and promoting extremism. The Supreme Court reportedly rejected his appeal on May 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barkiet is imprisoned on charges of inciting hatred, abusing state symbols and insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other additions feature U\u0142adzimir Kavalo\u016d and Aleh Dzen, convicted to prison terms for allegedly inciting hatred and defaming the head of state in connection with social media posts critical of \u0141uka\u0161enka, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are prohibited from engaging in education activity, publishing, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or criminal record annulment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to special monitoring. They are also banned from activities involving narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, arms and ammunition and explosives, for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
