May 30, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Each contractor and partner of the New Belarus passport will undergo verification procedures, opposition politician Valer Kavale\u016dski assured journalists yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His statement came in the light of recent findings by the Belarusian Investigative Center linking companies that designed the passport samples to Belarusian authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Businessman Viktar \u0160a\u016dco\u016d from the Alksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s close circle may be linked to Lithuania\u2019s Garsu pasaulis, while the opposition Heraldic Council\u2019s head is a former Belarusian interior ministry official, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Heraldic Council will not have any access to the personal data of Belarusians or the issue of passports, while Garsu pasaulis is known for producing Lithuanian passports and only helped ensure the New Belarus passport\u2019s compliance with ICAO standards, Kavale\u016dski stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A specialized passport office will be in charge of choosing and verifying contractors for the next stages of the project, including printing passports, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian opposition launched the initiative after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka signed an edict in September 2023, ordering Belarusian missions abroad to stop providing passport services to Belarusians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf one leader steps forward and says: \u2018I will not allow dictators to think that people are their property, that they can destroy hundreds of thousands of families,\u2019 others would follow, I am absolutely sure of it. If a hundred countries recognize this document, the rest would do the same,\u201d said opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja in Kaunas in early May after a lecture at Vytautas Magnus University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
