May 30, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> In a new episode of politically-motivated persecution recorded in Belarus on May 29, law enforcers raided the apartment of an IT engineer, who participated in opposition solidarity rallies abroad after fleeing Belarus, preparing to seize the property, devby.io <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within Belarus, authorities continued harassing participants in 2020 postelection protests and those who share opposition content. Five persons were arrested in Minsk over protests after police identified them on pictures, a pro-government source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrested actor Alaksandar H\u0142adki admitted under duress to participating in protests, following opposition content and signing up for the opposition Pieramoha Plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nadzieja \u0160utava was tried in A\u0161miany, Hrodna region, for sharing opposition content, the Pravo Imeyut <\/em>Telegram channel said. The verdict remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities filed criminal charges against protestant preacher Mika\u0142aj Chi\u0142a, Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija reported. He has been held at a pre-trial detention center just outside Minsk since his arrest on April 24. Details of the case remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 5,133 people have been convicted in politically-motivated criminal cases in Belarus over the past four years, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna also reported at least 70 convictions for donations to opposition groups and initiatives blacklisted by the Belarusian authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of May 30, human rights defenders identified at least 1,407 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
