May 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The European General Court (EGC) has upheld the European Union (EU) sanctions against Bie\u0142avija, rejecting the Belarusian airline’s appeal, according to the court’s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EGC concluded that the appellant’s benefits from and supports the regime of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It noted that Bie\u0142avija (Belavia) participated in the transfer of migrants who wanted to come to the EU from the Middle East. In particular, it increased the number of flights and even opened new routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court said that the airline helped the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime, whose actions helped foreigners to illegally cross the EU border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It found Bie\u0142avija’s arguments unconvincing, upheld the sanctions and ordered the company to pay litigation costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2021, Belarusian authorities diverted a Ryanair flight, en route from Athens to Vilnius, to a Minsk airport and arrested Belarusian journalist Raman Pratasievi\u010d and his Russian girlfriend Sofya Sapega who were on board. The authorities tried, convicted and later pardoned the couple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the incident, the state-owned airline was banned from flying to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
