May 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Budapest is interested in closer ties with Belarus in agriculture, industry, pharmaceuticals and food security, areas that are not covered by the European Union\u2019s restrictions, Belarusian state-run media report, citing Hungarian Foreign Minister P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hungarian diplomat has reportedly stressed the need to keep the channels of communication open at his meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Siarhiej Alejnik in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CEOs of 24 Hungarian companies accompany Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 on his visit to Belarus and are expected to participate in a business forum. Their presence demonstrates the interest on the part of the business community, and politicians should take it into account, Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also attended a meeting of the Belarusian-Hungarian intergovernmental economic cooperation commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hungary is the only EU member to maintain official contacts with the Belarusian government, accused of human rights abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Budapest joined the EU sanctions against Minsk, but Hungarian officials have repeatedly stated their opposition to that policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last September, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka accepted credentials from Hungary\u2019s Zita Bencsik, the only EU ambassador to present credentials to the Belarusian ruler after 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
