May 27, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Forty-six Belarusian and 294 Russian nationals permanently residing in Lithuania have been deprived of the right to keep and bear arms, the BNS<\/em> news agency reported yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There are two people whose weapons have not been found so far. These individuals have been contacted, but they are not in Lithuania. The weapons will be taken away from them when they are back,” LRT<\/em> quoted the Lithuanian interior ministry as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of the year, all concerned gun owners were reportedly asked to “voluntarily sell the weapons or hand them over to the police” by April. “Most of them took advantage of this opportunity, and the remaining weapons have been seized by the police after April 1.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2022, the Lithuanian Seimas approved amendments to the law on the control of arms and ammunition. The legislation received 112 “Yes” votes and one “No” vote, with 13 abstentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amendments came into force in April 2023. They banned Belarusians and Russians permanently residing in Lithuania from buying and storing weapons, accessories, ammunition or their parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian and Russian gun owners had to get rid of them or face confiscation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, it was reported that 42 Belarusian and 294 Russian nationals in Lithuania owned guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A similar ban came into force in Estonia in December 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
