May 23, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> If there is a hell on earth, it is Homiel’s Women’s Colony No. 4, the founder of the human rights initiative Palitviazynka, Ja\u016dhienija Do\u016dhaja, told participants at a conference in Prague today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, inmates sew uniforms for Belarusian law enforcers. Before going to the sewing shop, at six in the morning, inmates “soak up puddles in the yard with rags.” And in winter, inmates are forced to “carry 60-kilogram sacks of snow and break ice.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do\u016dhaja pointed out that some of political inmates are held incommunicado, and many suffer health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The women are mistreated and often receive vital medical care with delays. She cited an account by one former political prisoner whom a paramedic forced to crawl on her belly for pills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Female political prisoners are a huge humanitarian disaster for themselves, their families, their children, and all of Belarus. Saving their lives is our priority,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference participants discussed ways to help political prisoners. The event, organized by the Office of the Belarusian Democratic Forces in the Czech Republic, will continue until May 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to human rights activists, there are about 200 female political prisoners in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
