May 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The European Union stopped 231 illegal entries from Belarus on May 21, down 19 from the previous day, according to data from border agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian Border Guard Service did not report any violations. It registered this year’s record, 24 attempts to sneak in from Belarus, on March 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Latvian State Border Guard stopped 76 attempts, this year’s daily record for the Baltic state. The previous record of 72 attempts was registered there on April 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Polish Border Guard, 378 people tried to cross into the country illegally from Belarus over the past two days. This year’s record, 457, was on April 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout 2023 with illegal border crossings picking up the pace in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
