May 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja urged EU culture ministers to help integrate Belarus into the European cultural space yesterday at a meeting in Antwerp, Belgium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You, as ministers of culture, can support our fight by supporting our culture. Support projects strengthening Belarusian national identity. Provide residences to exiled Belarusian artists. Invite them to your festivals, conferences, and book fairs,” said the opposition leader who, according to her chief advisor Franak Via\u010dorka, had the status of Belarusian president-elect at the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Cichano\u016dskaja, Belarusian culture continues to flourish both underground and in exile despite repression and censorship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“New initiatives are emerging. People study the Belarusian language and true history through the Internet. The Belarusian diaspora celebrates now ‘illegal’ traditional holidays, and organizes exhibitions of repressed artists,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia and “its puppet regime in Minsk” are doing everything possible to erase the Belarusian national identity and destroy everything that connects Belarusians to Europe, she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“History books are being rewritten. National heroes are called traitors. Writers and musicians, who refuse to follow a ‘new line,’ are labeled ‘extremists.’ The most talented were thrown in prisons or had to flee. Even speaking the Belarusian language became a crime!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In Ukraine, Russia fights with shells and tanks. In Belarus they fight with propaganda and culture. Russia sees our countries as a part of the ‘Russian World’ (Russkiy Mir). Its goal is to colonize and assimilate, to make us the same as Russians,” Cichano\u016dskaja said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that there are thousands of political prisoners in Belarus, including hundreds of cultural figures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of them, such as artist Ale\u015b Pu\u0161kin, did not survive torture and isolation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“His story is a story of fight and suffering . . . His life and death remind us about the power of culture, but also the price people are paying for their ideals,” she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja presented Pu\u0161kin’s painting “Belarusian Sun” to Flemish Minister-President Jan Jambon. The artist made the frame from the old wood of his fence in the village of Bobr, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The painting will be kept in one of the local museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“At the annual meeting, the relevant ministers discuss the most important issues of culture and identity. For the first time, a representative of a non-EU country participates in that meeting,” Franak Via\u010dorka told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
