May 10, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The European Union stopped 2,248 attempts by foreigners from third countries to enter the bloc from Belarus in nine days in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland accounted for 95.5 percent of the attempts, followed by Latvia with 4.3 percent and Lithuania with 0.2 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 350 attempts were stopped on May 8 alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polish Border Guard reported that illegal migrants threw branches and stones at patrols. On the morning of May 8, migrants set fire to a border post by pulling a burning stick through the fence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of the year, European authorities have reported 13,367 illegal entry attempts from Belarus: Poland, 85.9 percent; Latvia, 12.7 percent; and Lithuania, 1.4 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compared with the same period last year, the number of cases increased by 8.9 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of 2024, the numbers have been increasing month by month: there were 96 attempts to sneak into the EU in January, 458 in February, 4,238 in March and 6,327 in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warning from opposition intelligence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s security services are massing migrants, expecting them to storm the Polish border soon, the ByPol association of former law enforcers said yesterday, citing its sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRiot police officers transport migrants from Minsk at night in civilian cars,\u201d ByPol said. \u201cMigrants, including women, are sorted into groups of 25-30 people. Most of them are Muslims who have relatives in Warsaw, Berlin or Brussels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to ByPol, riot police officers wearing plain clothes participated in migrants\u2019 clashes with Polish border guards before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group also said that riot police officers \u201creceive two to three weeks of training\u201d from Wagner mercenaries at a training ground of 5th Special Forces Brigade stationed in Marjina Horka, Minsk region. Then they go to the Smarho\u0144 district, Hrodna region, to patrol the border with Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A turbulent border<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk’s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout 2023 with illegal border crossings picking up the pace in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
