May 10, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The interior ministry has designated 17 men and five women as \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total of entries to 4,056, says the updated list on its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifteen are serving prison terms, while seven others have criminal records and may be serving non-custodial sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights groups listed jailed Ihar Kazuba\u016d and Vital Maksim\u010duk as political prisoners. Kazuba\u016d was convicted for allegedly insulting and defaming Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and inciting hatred in connection with politically-sensitive social media posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maksim\u010duk, a father of three, was sentenced to six years in prison and a fine of 40,000 rubels (about $12,380) on protest- and extremism-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the extremist register are banned from education, publishing, government jobs and military service for five years after completing their sentences or criminal record expungement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to special monitoring. They are also banned from activities involving narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, arms and ammunition and explosives, for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
