May 8, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Permanent representatives of the 27 EU countries are discussing the expansion of sanctions against Belarus, “the Kremlin’s vassal state . . . pretty much integrated into Russia,” Politico<\/em> reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It noted that the European Commission proposed restricting Belarusian exports of gold, oil, gas and diamonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EU companies might be banned from selling Belarus luxury goods, maritime navigation equipment, and goods and technology used in the oil and gas industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the website, a ban for European companies to provide services to Belarus is being considered. The bloc may also expand the range of dual-use goods banned for export to the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since Belarus is a major exporter of potash and other fertilizers, some EU countries fear a sharp rise in food prices in third countries if Belarusian exports are completely blocked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, according to the website, the European Commission believes that the sanctions against Belarus will not affect the supply of wheat or fertilizers to “the third countries most in need.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 18, the European Council approved tariffs on grains, oilseeds and their derivatives from Russia and Belarus, including wheat, corn and sunflower meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
