May 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Polish Border Guard stopped 1,061 illegal entry attempts from Belarus over five days in May and 10,402 since the beginning of the year, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of data from the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of attempts increased by a factor of 2.2 since early May 2023, and by 25.5 percent since January\u2013April and early May 2023 combined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking into account statistics from the Latvian and Lithuanian border guards (77 and two attempts over six days), in May third-country nationals made 1,140 attempts to illegally enter the European Union from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 12,259 such attempts were registered since the beginning of 2024, an increase of 4.2 percent from the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of 2024, the numbers have been increasing month by month: there were 96 attempts to sneak into the EU in January, 458 in February, 4,238 in March and 6,327 in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout 2023 with illegal border crossings picking up the pace in February and reaching 5,893 attempts in April alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic States and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
