May 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The tactical nuclear drill, announced today, will involve “delivering special munitions to missile and aviation military units, loading them onto launchers and attaching them to aircraft,” Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has told a grand rally ahead of Victory Day, May 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka ordered the Armed Forces to hold the drill earlier today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka, deputy chairman of the United Transitional Cabinet, dismissed the announcement as a major psychological operation organized by the Kremlin ahead of a Ukraine peace conference in Switzerland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The missile battalions of Iskander and Polonez operational-tactical systems will be secretly deployed to designated positions and will practice launching missile strikes to repel a probable attack on Belarus,” \u0141uka\u0161enka said, as quoted by his press office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“At the same time, military aviation units will prepare frontline Su-25 attack aircraft for operations with special munitions to support our defending troops and inflict unacceptable damage on the enemy,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drill will involve Russian troops training to use nuclear weapons, he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Military units of the Moscow and Leningrad Military Districts, as well as the Baltic Fleet forces and means stationed in the Kaliningrad region will help us obtain operational information.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka said that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss coordination and the use of nuclear munitions by troops tomorrow in Moscow. The “final decision” will be made there, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went on to say that the General Staffs of Belarus and Russia will command the troops and signal them to simulate the use of tactical nuclear weapons in line with “the existing plans of interaction.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his opinion, the world has never been as close to nuclear war. “Statements by Western politicians — France is at the forefront of the Europeans — escalate tension not only on the European continent but also globally,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an apparent reference to NATO’s Steadfast Defender, he said that 90,000 foreign troops are concentrated near Belarus’ borders. “Who of you can stand up and say that of these 90,000, 10,000 will not attack our border tomorrow? Nobody,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka noted that for this reason he decided to deploy units, including border guards and interior troops to protect possible approach routes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If it is quiet and good, it will be calm and peaceful here also. If someone uses arms against us, we will retaliate. We will do it immediately,” \u0141uka\u0161enka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, the Russian General Staff announced the start of preparations for a tactical nuclear weapons exercise to improve \u201cthe nonstrategic nuclear forces\u2019 readiness for combat missions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian General Staff clarified that the exercise will be held by the order of Vladimir Putin \u201cin response to provocative statements and threats by individual Western officials.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron constituted a \u201ccompletely new round of escalation of tension.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, Macron refused to rule out potentially deploying French troops, should Kyiv request them, while Cameron said that Ukraine had the right to use British weapons for strikes within Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
