May 7, Pozirk. About 120 territorial troops reservists from the Mahilo\u016d and Bycha\u016d districts have started regular training sessions that will last until May 31, the defense ministry’s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drill will also involve the formation of people\u2019s militia units and exercises for officials in charge of setting up territorial troops, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training will conclude with a command-staff exercise of reservists and police forces that will practice protecting key facilities, ensuring public order and combatting sabotage and reconnaissance groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Territorial troops are an auxiliary part of the Armed Forces called up in times of war or military tension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2023, Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin announced that territorial defense \u201cis being transformed from a support system into a full-fledged combat one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka announced his intention to set up people\u2019s militia units at the village-council level \u201cjust in case,\u201d citing the \u201cnegative Ukrainian experience.\u201d These units can regroup into a partisan movement and become a reserve for territorial defense in wartime, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities keep conducting drills amid worsening relations with the West and ongoing Russia’s war against Ukraine, in which Minsk supports the Kremlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
