May 2, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Neurologist Rus\u0142an Badam\u0161yn will go on trial in Minsk on May 7 on charges of violent disorder linked to his participation in 2020 postelection protests, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judge Julija Krepskaja will preside over the proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Badam\u0161yn has been in custody since February 28. After August 2020, he served five jail terms on minor charges, spending 63 days behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, he was fired from the National Neurology and Neurosurgery Center after being late for work on the day he was released from jail. Most recently, the doctor worked at a private clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late 2023, Viasna reported hundreds of instances of politically-motivated persecution of healthcare professionals. Some were fired for their civic position or were forced to flee the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 35 doctors were convicted in politically-motivated criminal cases and 15 are still held behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
