April 30, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The International Panel of Parliamentarians for Freedom of Religion or Belief, hosted by the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, has opened for signing a letter in support of Belarusians’ religious freedom, Christian Vision (Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija) reported<\/a>. The letter was unveiled as opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja visited the committee yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It focuses on Belarusian legislation on the activities of religious organizations. “The provisions of this new law contradict Belarus’ obligations under international human rights law,” it reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parliamentarians noted their openness to “collaborating with the Belarusian authorities to find solutions that respect the rights and freedoms of all.” They called on Minsk to “bring Belarusian laws and policies into line with its freely undertaken international commitments,” taking concrete measures to protect freedom of religion or belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the signatures are collected, the letter will be sent to the Belarusian authorities and the Norwegian embassies in various countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 10, the Christian Vision group submitted materials for the report of a special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 21, UN experts expressed “serious concern” about the adoption of amendments in Belarus concerning freedom of conscience and the activities of religious organizations. In their opinion, this contradicts the country’s international obligations. It was noted that at the stage of parliamentary hearings the experts sent the authorities an official letter expressing concern about a number of provisions. The letter remains unanswered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s press office announced the signing of the amendments on January 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IPPFoRB was founded in Oslo in November 2014. It is guided by the Charter for Freedom of Religion or Belief, signed by more than 30 parliamentarians from around the world at the Nobel Peace Center.
