April 26, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The government has added 14 people to the list of persons “involved in extremist activities,” which now contains 4,011 entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authorities often use anti-extremism laws to imprison political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the interior ministry’s website, eight of those blacklisted are in jail. The criminal records of five have not been expunged, and one undergoes compulsory treatment, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eight prisoners include former central bank specialist Alaksandar Ciare\u0161\u010danka, whose prosecution is believed to be politically motivated. The other political prisoners are karate instructor Alaksandr Ja\u016dcicha\u016d and U\u0142adzimir Levus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All three were convicted on extremism charges. The other five, Siarhiej Melnika\u016d, Valer Kru\u0107ka, Rus\u0142an \u0160aby\u0161a\u016d, Valer Ha\u016dratovi\u010d and Siarhiej Dziehciarenka, have not yet been designated as political prisoners, but the charges against them are likely to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the list of individuals involved in extremist activities are banned from any education- and publishing-related activity, as well as from holding state positions and from doing military service, for five years after completing their sentences or after the related conviction is deleted from the criminal record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to close monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are also banned from activities involving narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, arms and ammunition and explosives, for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
