April 24, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has been elected chairman of the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly (UNS), the head of its counting commission, Ina Miad\u017aviedzieva, announced today in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka, running unopposed, reportedly received 1,157 “Yes” votes and one “No” vote, further expanding his power over the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the updated Constitution, the UNS is the supreme representative body that sets the strategic priorities for society and the state. It ensures \u201cthe inviolability of the constitutional order, the continuity of generations and civil harmony.\u201d It has a maximum of 1,200 members with a five-year mandate. The UNS must convene at least once a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can propose legislation and constitutional amendments and will approve foreign and domestic policy priorities and socioeconomic programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka said the UNS comprised his allies only. “There are and will be no enemies here,” he said. He added that over the past 30 years, he alone has been responsible for decision-making, but from now on he will be sharing this responsibility with the UNS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka’s influential aide Alaksandar Kosiniec was elected deputy chairman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the delegates elected 13 presidium members, including Maryna Lan\u010de\u016dskaja, chair of the parliamentary committee on legislation; Siarhiej Siviec, chairman of the upper house committee on international affairs, and Kanstancin Burak, the chief of staff of the Belarusian Council of Ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u0142adzimir Karanik, chairman of the Hrodna Regional Executive Committee; Juryj \u0160ulejka, chairman of the Brest Regional Executive Committee; and Rus\u0142an Strachar, deputy chairman of the Mahilo\u016d Regional Executive Committee, also joined the politburo-like body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides, it includes Viciebskab\u0142haz CEO Alaksandar Brancevi\u010d and Homiel Chemical Plant CEO D\u017amitryj \u010carniako\u016d, as well as Vadzim Bohu\u0161, rector of the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics, and Siarhiej Palako\u016d, director of the N. N. Alexandrov National Cancer Centre of Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other presidium members are former central bank governor Nadzieja Jermakova, Belarusian Women’s Union Chairwoman Volha \u0160pile\u016dskaja and Judge Iryna Tylec, chairwoman of the National Council of Judges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
