April 18, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The BySol Solidarity Foundation has helped Kry\u015bcina \u010carankova, an activist and frontwoman of the VIKT(A)R xOi! band from Mazyr, Homiel region, leave Belarus days after her release from prison, its co-founder Andrej Stry\u017eak said on Facebook, citing threats of new persecution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities released \u010carankova on April 11 from the women’s penal colony in Homiel, where she had served a two-and-a-half-year term for allegedly inciting hatred in her social media posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested the woman together with her husband in late March 2022. A few weeks later, authorities blacklisted her Instagram page with more than 5,000 followers as extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2023, \u010carankova’s name was added to the official register of people involved in extremist activities. Rights groups designated her as a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
