April 1<\/strong>2, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and Vladimir Putin at their meeting in Moscow yesterday dismissed speculations that they contemplated an attack on a European Union country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey are shouting that \u0141uka\u0161enka and Putin will take Europe tomorrow,\u201d the Belarusian leader\u2019s press office quoted him as saying. \u201cWe have never discussed such plans that we want to capture any country. We have many problems of our own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin dismissed speculations about Russia\u2019s aggressive plans as nonsense that the ruling circles in Western countries use to justify spending on the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late March, Lithuania handed a Belarusian diplomat a note of protest in connection with \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s remark suggesting that the Belarusian army might attack the Suwa\u0142ki Gap, a narrow strip in Poland and Lithuania that some Western experts call a \u201cweak link.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days later, while inspecting troops at the border with Lithuania, the Belarusian ruler said that he was preparing for war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
