April 9, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The central election commission has registered new members of the National Assembly\u2019s Council of the Republic, its Telegram channel says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upper chamber members in Belarus are not elected directly but approved by local councils and appointed by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 4, local elected councils picked 56 members for each of the six regions and Minsk, the election commission said. Eight have graduate degrees or academic titles, while 31 were distinguished with state awards, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventeen are affiliated with pro-government parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chamber also includes 13 CEOs of state-run industrial and transport companies, local council chairpersons, the chief physicians of public health establishments, culture workers, education officials, bankers, state-run media executives and military officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Council of the Republic is expected to convene for its first session on April 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s National Assembly election campaign was marred by repression and the exclusion of any opposition from the political process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
