March 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> President Andrzej Duda has granted Polish citizenship to Belarusian high jumper Maryja \u017dodzik, the Polish Athletic Association reported yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said the athlete, who has Polish roots, now has a chance to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am very happy that the president signed all the documents and granted me citizenship,” \u017dodzik said, according to a Russian translation. “I am proud to represent Poland, the country of my ancestors. I hope that everything related to procedures . . . will go smoothly and I will soon wear a jersey with an eagle on my chest.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 18, the high jumper made an out-of-competition appearance at the Polish championships. She set a personal record of 1 m 97 cm. This matches the Olympic standard and is the best result in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u017dodzik comes from Baranavi\u010dy in the Brest region. Since 2022, she lives in Bia\u0142ystok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2020, she signed an open letter against election fraud and police brutality in Belarus. She also condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the athletes who supported protesters in 2020 and were barred from competitions in Belarus and have ended their careers. Three athletes who have taken the Polish sport nationality have a chance to go to the Olympics.
