March 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Seven Belarusian and 12 Russian athletes have been allowed to compete in the Paris Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee’s relations director James MacLeod told<\/a> a press conference yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of Belarusian athletes with Olympic licenses is projected to increase to 22 (Russians \u2013 36), he said. The unlikely maximum is 28 (55).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MacLeod said that athletes from both countries will not take part in the Parade of Nations but will be given an opportunity to “experience” the opening ceremony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is the same scenario that was used for independent Olympic participants at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 for athletes from the former Yugoslavia,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should any of them win in Paris, an IOC-approved flag would be raised and a special anthem tune will be played without lyrics, he added. But their medals won’t be displayed on the medal table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A decision on their participation in the closing ceremony will be made later, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the war in Ukraine began in February 2022, the IOC urged sports federations to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It later recommended that some of them could be allowed as neutral athletes under certain conditions, such as not supporting the war. In December 2023, the IOC allowed neutrals to compete in Paris Olympic Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
