March 15, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The interior ministry has designated 15 men and three women as \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total of entries to 3,882, says the updated list on its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eight of them are held behind bars, including the Soviet-Afghan war veteran U\u0142adzimir Lisica, Homiel opposition activist Aleh Kacapa\u016d as well as Dzijana Stulba, Hienad\u017a \u017dukiel, Vital Lebiedzie\u016d, and Pavie\u0142 Kuncevi\u010d whom human rights groups consider political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The charges against them ranged from inciting hatred and calling for sanctions to insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and facilitating extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0160krada\u016d was convicted on protest-related charges; Arciom Ko\u0142asa\u016d of insulting officials and \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People placed on the extremist register are banned from education, publishing, government jobs and military service for five years after completing their sentences or criminal record expungement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their financial transactions are subject to special monitoring. They are also banned from activities involving narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, arms and ammunition and explosives, for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
