March 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Belarusian Ministry of Internal Affairs this year identified 260 people who transferred more than $5,000 to what it called extremist groups in reference to solidarity and opposition organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a report on the Minsk regional police website, these people were forced to pay over $356,000 in donations to state social and medical institutions, including more than $120,000 to the M\u015bcis\u0142a\u016d Special Boarding School, as punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, law enforcers opened 17 criminal cases over donations to what they call extremist organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the 2020 presidential election, security agencies such as the KGB forced those who donated to opposition and solidarity groups to pay exorbitant amounts to state institutions as punishment. These arrangements have not been officially documented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who refused have been prosecuted and given lengthy prison terms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officers tend to use Criminal Code articles against extremism and terrorism funding to extort the donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights activists have documented cases in which citizens were given prison sentences even after paying exorbitant amounts to state institutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
