March 12, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Minsk’s secret services are trying to recruit Lithuanians coming to Belarus and Belarusians living in Lithuania, lrt.lt<\/a><\/em> reported citing officials and a nonprofit leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most Belarusians with Lithuanian residence permits travel to their homeland an average of seven times a year, the report says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian security agencies can approach anyone for recruitment or information, said Darius Jauni\u0161kis, director of the State Security Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian community in Lithuania has grown significantly in the last few years and now numbers 60,000 people, which makes it easier for Belarusian intelligence to find suitable recruitment targets, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political analyst Vytis Jurkonis, head of Freedom House’s Lithuanian office, said Belarusian agents have intensified their recruitment efforts also because their capability is limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secret services cannot see financial flows, so they are trying to work through social media and intimidate us, Jurkonis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, the State Security Department and the Lithuanian defense ministry said in a report that Belarusian agents were trying to recruit members of a Lithuanian diplomatic mission and force them to act against Lithuania’s national interests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
