October 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> It “would not be bad” to have a second nuclear power plant in Belarus because it is “very, very profitable,” Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka told officials in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the first nuclear power plant project was launched, the country was not involved in such technologies, and the construction led to the emergence of a new economic sector, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We chose two sites and built one plant. And today our share of nuclear energy consumption in total electricity consumption is higher than in the United States or even in Russia. Our peaceful atom accounts for about a quarter of the total,” he said, as quoted by his press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that initial disucssions on a second nuclear plant have already begun. “Should we add two units to the existing plant, or should we build two more units in the Mahilo\u016d region, where we have the second site. Then we would get more than half of our electricity from the nuclear sector. The product is clean and very profitable.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Snikkars said on October 17 that the ministry was \u201cluke\u00adwarm and cau\u00adtious\u201d about build\u00ading a sec\u00adond nuclear pow\u00ader plant in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 2, it was report\u00aded that Rus\u00adsi\u00ada\u2019s nuclear cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adtion Rosatom is ready to help Belarus build it, if Min\u00adsk so decides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that experts were study\u00ading the prospects for the growth of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty con\u00adsump\u00adtion in the coun\u00adtry and prepar\u00ading long-term fore\u00adcasts.
