February 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The foreign-based opposition will use the current elections “as a rehearsal or an early stage to prepare for a coup d’\u00e9tat during the upcoming presidential election in 2025,” Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka told security and defense officials in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exiled opposition leaders and their foreign supervisors in secret services are preparing three basic scenarios for that period, \u0141uka\u0161enka said, according to the unofficial Telegram channel of his press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The most desired scenario” is “organizing a coup d’\u00e9tat or a violent power grab during election campaigns,” he said. It is considered unlikely as “they don\u2019t yet see any real conditions for the situation to aggravate like in 2020.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another scenario is “playing the long game” and using soft power if the other scenarios fail, he continued. “Essentially, this game has not stopped as long as independent Belarus has existed,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka tasked the Ministry of Defense to overhaul the defense system this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combat training of military units is a priority, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
