February 11, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The number of extremism-related criminal cases in Belarus has been decreasing, Andrej Skurat, the Hrodna region’s deputy prosecutor, told employees of the milk and meat processing plants in Va\u016dkavysk. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People started analyzing the situation in the world and our country, while the fervor of 2020 has cooled down,” the local state-run newspaper Na\u0161 \u010cas<\/em> quoted him as saying. “Nevertheless, some may still have pictures, shared posts, likes and comments on social media from communities or groups branded extremist,” he added, noting that the penalty may amount to a fine or 15 days in jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skurat recommended checking social media accounts and manually deleting potentially dangerous content for the past five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities are ready to counteract attempts of “destructive forces” based abroad “to destabilize the situation in Belarus” during the 2024-25 electoral campaign, the prosecutor stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities widely use charges of extremism and terrorism to harass opponents and criminalize any links with independent media outlets, most of which were forced to relocate abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023 alone, 10 independent media outlets were branded “extremist” groups, while 33 convicted journalists were blacklisted as “extremists” and 12, as “terrorists.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
