{"id":64103,"date":"2024-01-31T11:36:21","date_gmt":"2024-01-31T08:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=64103"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"update-on-arrests-trials-politically-motivated-persecution-122","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/64103\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on arrests, trials, politically-motivated persecution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>January 31, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on January 30 as authorities continued harassing dissenters and jailed opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Security forces detained and interrogated more than 200 people during the January 23-24 raids on political prisoners\u2019 relatives, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mother of Andrej Sa\u010de\u016dka who is jailed in a politically-motivated case may be under arrest since January 23, MAYDAY.TEAM reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police arrested several people at the Nioman glass factory in Biaroza\u016dka, Hrodna region, for sharing opposition content, a pro-government Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natalla Dubro\u016dnik, Andrej Auk\u0161tulevi\u010d, Alena Tarasievi\u010d, Volha Lisicyna and Ivan Lisicyn were tried in the Hrodna region for sharing opposition content, the <em>Sudy, Zaderzhaniya. Grodno i Oblast<\/em> Telegram channel reported. The verdicts remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A judge in Minsk sentenced Alaksandar Zianko\u016d, a Barysa\u016d-based photographer and freelance journalist, to three years in prison on extremism-related charges, the Belarusian Association of Journalists reported.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michai\u0142 Antona\u016d was given 18 months of restricted freedom in home confinement in late October for allegedly participating in protests, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ex-customs officers Ja\u016dhien Hurynovi\u010d, Viktar Novik and U\u0142adzimir \u017duromski have been on trial in Minsk since October 10, Viasna said. They face eight criminal charges, including high treason, facilitating extremism, abusing power and inciting hatred. Authorities have not disclosed any details of the case and closed the trial to the public. The defendants may face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December, Hieorhij \u010caravaka and Alaksei \u0160vieca\u016d were given five years in a high-security prison each for donations to the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment, a Belarusian volunteer unit fighting alongside Ukrainian forces, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jailed D\u017amitryj Ma\u0142o\u010danka, whom human rights groups consider a political prisoner, went on trial in Minsk to answer charges of slander, according to Viasna. In May 2023, he was sentenced to two years in prison for allegedly inciting hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u017amitryj Pa\u017aniako\u016d, a military faculty instructor at Brest State University, was convicted in late November of high treason, <em>Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. The sentence is &nbsp;unknown. He lost an appeal on January 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On February 2, the Supreme Court will hear Juryj Jurenia&#8217;s appeal against the five-year prison sentence given on extremism-related charges, Viasna reported. Human rights groups consider him a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New political prisoners<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarusian human rights community declared 15 people political prisoners, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of January 31, human rights defenders identified at least 1,431 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
