December 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on December 28 with the arrest of a family of four on charges of high treason making headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homiel police arrested Vasil Prochara\u016d, his wife \u0141arysa, son Pavie\u0142 and daughter Anastasija on charges of high treason, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. All four are held at Homiel\u2019s pre-trial detention center. No further details are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man from Minsk was arrested in Asipovi\u010dy, Mahilo\u016d region, for allegedly writing more than 400 critical comments, including about the Russian Wagner Group, pro-government Telegram channels said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mother and grandmother of a four-year-old child reportedly arrested over protests on December 27 are Julija Karalova and her mother Tamara, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. Both own a successful business in the spa and beauty industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least four people were charged with sharing opposition content and arrested in December as they returned to Belarus, Hrodna.life<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blogger Maksim Filipovi\u010d was tried for sharing opposition content, the Homiel branch of Viasna said. Human rights defenders do not know the date of the trial or the verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Miory, Viciebsk region, fined Ihar Vojta\u016d, in charge of the local housing and utility management authority, 925 rubels (about $290) for allegedly sharing opposition content, the Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu<\/em> Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A month ago, authorities held 19 trials in Navapo\u0142ack, Viciebsk region, persecuting people for social media posts, zerkalo.io<\/em> reported. Thirteen trials that took place in late November and early December might be linked to a wave of arrests in November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u0142adzimir Ry\u0142ka from the Brest region was given 10 days in jail for possessing Pahonia coat of arms stickers that police officers found during a search, MAYDAY TEAM said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Viciebsk fined Alaksandar Pava\u0142ocki 3,900 rubels (about $1,230) for posting his picture with the white-red-white flag in the background, Vitebsk, Ya Gulayu<\/em> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Investigative Committee said it launched a criminal case against exiled opposition politicians and activists Alena \u017dyvah\u0142od, Alaksandar Dabravolski, Pavie\u0142 Libier and Pavie\u0142 Maryni\u010d on charges of obstructing the work of the central election commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Extremist” list update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) labeled the Novaja Bie\u0142aru\u015b (New Belarus) application as an extremist group, Viasna reported. The KGB named Pavie\u0142 Libier and Jaras\u0142a\u016d Licha\u010de\u016dski as suspects involved in the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other additions feature Pisma Solidarnosti Belarus 2020<\/em>, a Facebook group, and its alleged members Maryna Kasinerava, Ivan Dzia\u0161uk, Natalla Malec and Iryna Pahadajeva, the KGB said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ihar Alinievi\u010d, who is serving a 20-year prison term on charges widely seen as politically motivated, spent some time in a punishment cell in December, the Pravo Na Vosstaniye<\/em> Telegram channel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police searched the home of exiled opposition activist Alaksiej Franckievi\u010d who heads the Ukraine-based Vilna Bilorus charitable foundation, its press office said. The foundation protects rights of Belarusians in Ukraine and assist them to secure a victory over Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of December 29, human rights defenders identified at least 1,466 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
