November 15, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has explained his refusal to come to Minsk for the November 23 summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization by saying that the CSTO “has not reacted properly to Armenia’s security challenges.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pashinyan said Armenians do not understand why they should participate in CSTO events if the bloc ignores their concerns. “The fundamental problem is that the CSTO essentially refuses to legally register its zone of responsibility in Armenia,” he said, as quoted by News.am.<\/em> Yerevan cannot subscribe to the “logic that would in any way question Armenia’s territorial integrity and independence,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went on to say that Yerevan is “looking for and finding” other security allies, as its current partners “cannot sell us weapons and ammunition, including for objective reasons.” “Strategically, we do not plan to announce a change in our policy until we decide to leave the CSTO,” Pashinyan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka called Pashinyan in the morning of November 14 to invite him to the summit, but the Armenian prime minister declined the invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler took the refusal “calmly,” a spokeswoman for \u0141uka\u0161enka said. Natalla Ejsmant added that her boss offered Pashinyan “not to rush, not to make hasty decisions, but to seriously consider whether his next steps are disintegrating.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pashinyan has repeatedly criticized the CSTO for its failure to support Yerevan in the armed conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CSTO is a mil\u00adi\u00ad\u00adtary-polit\u00adi\u00ad\u00adcal alliance whose declared goals are strength\u00aden\u00ading peace, inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal and region\u00adal secu\u00adri\u00adty and sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty, and pro\u00adtect\u00ading its mem\u00adber states\u2019 inde\u00adpen\u00addence, ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal integri\u00adty and sov\u00ader\u00adeign\u00adty. It con\u00adsists of Arme\u00adnia, Belarus, Kaza\u00adkhstan, Kyr\u00adgyzs\u00adtan, Rus\u00adsia, and Tajik\u00adistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rus\u00adsia-led bloc may be in cri\u00adsis as it fails to pro\u00advide its mem\u00adbers\u2019 col\u00adlec\u00adtive secu\u00adri\u00adty, experts say.
